CONCORD’s annual HUB 1 meeting on Sustainable Development was hosted this year by FOND Romania, within the EU Presidency Project. We were pleased to receive CONCORDs member organisations and networks representatives on the 17th and 18th of April and share perspectives on how we can maximize our impact in development cooperation and influence the implementation of the 2030 Agenda at EU level, in the upcoming year.
From an advocacy point of view, the past months brought several key achievements, such as the publishing of the Reflection Paper ‘Towards a Sustainable Europe by 2030’ by the European Commission. The Reflection Paper sets out a scenario in which the European Union would adopt an overarching Sustainable Development Strategy, which is CONCORD’s call ever since the adoption of the 2030 Agenda. By being part of the Multi-Stakeholder Platform on SDGs, CONCORD Europe could advance the message of all its member organisations and contribute to the Reflection Paper.
Political processes we will keep an eye on
- Reflection Paper ‘Towards a Sustainable EU by 2030’
- Joint Synthesis Report on the European Consensus for Development
- Sibiu Summit 2019
- EU reporting to the High Level Political Forum
- Addressing the 2030 Agenda for 2019-2024 EU’s Strategic Agenda
- Strong development cooperation priorities for next European Commission
Two strategic objectives were also set for 2019, within the working groups on Inequalities and Migration:
‘By the end of the year to be a clear commitment from the Commission and Council to implement the 2030 Agenda and address inequalities… Inequality and just economic transition to be raised higher on the agenda, with specific references in the letters of mission for relevant Commissioners.’
‘EU institutions and national governments to take in greater account a human rights based approach into their policies on migration, development and security.’
While having all of CONCORD’s national platforms and networks in the same room, the Romanian NGDO Platform FOND, the Finnish platform Fingo and the Croatian Platform CROSOL presented their joint priorities for the EU Presidency Project. They briefly introduced the specificities for each of the platform’s 6 months activity period.
And yet another highlight of the CONCORD HUB1 Meeting was the networking event facilitated by FOND Romania, between the Working Party on Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development and CONCORD Europe members. The event proved to be a great opportunity for an eye to eye conversation with the Working Party members, giving us the opportunity to underline some of our key messages: the need for an overarching Sustainable Development strategy at EU level, the need for a political leadership and the key importance of Policy Coherence for Sustainable Development (PCSD).
In order to make our message even clearer, the networking event also marked the launch of CONCORD’s latest publication on PCSD, addressed especially to the next EU leaders that will spin the wheel of EU policies for the next 5 years.
